Which factor slows down evaporation?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: High relative humidity

Answer: C, high relative humidity. Evaporation occurs when water molecules leave a surface and enter the air. If the surrounding air already contains a large amount of water vapour, it has less capacity to accept additional vapour, so evaporation becomes slower. Strong wind usually removes moist air from above the surface and speeds evaporation. Low relative humidity means the air is relatively dry and can accept more vapour, also favouring faster evaporation. Higher temperature generally gives surface molecules more energy and increases evaporation, when other conditions are comparable. Therefore C is the only slowing factor among these choices. Memory cue: dry, warm and windy conditions usually dry water faster; humid air slows the process.
