A country has a population of 10 million. In one year it records 300000 births, 100000 deaths, 50000 immigrants and 150000 emigrants. What is the total growth rate?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: 1 percent

Total population change has two parts: natural change and net migration. Natural change is births minus deaths, while net migration is immigrants minus emigrants. After finding the total numerical change, divide it by the original population and multiply by 100 to obtain the percentage growth rate.

Natural increase is \(300000-100000=200000\). Net migration is \(50000-150000=-100000\), because emigration is larger. Total change is therefore \(200000-100000=100000\). Relative to 10,000,000, the rate is \(100000\div10000000\times100=1\) percent. Thus option B is correct.
