If immigration and emigration are equal in a country, what is net migration?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: Zero

Net migration measures the balance between people entering a country and people leaving it. It is calculated as \(Net\ migration=Immigration-Emigration\). Immigration adds people to the country, while emigration removes people. Equal flows therefore cancel each other in the calculation.

If the number entering is exactly equal to the number leaving, their difference is zero. For example, 500 immigrants and 500 emigrants produce \(500-500=0\). Hence net migration is zero, so option C is correct. This does not mean that no movement occurred; it means that inward and outward movements were equal overall.
