Two countries have a total dependency ratio of 60. Country X has a youth dependency ratio of 45 and country Y has a youth dependency ratio of 25. Which country has higher old-age dependency and by how much?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: Country Y by 20 points

The total dependency ratio is made up of youth dependency plus old-age dependency. It compares dependants with the working-age population, but the required calculation here only needs the additive relationship. Thus, if the total and youth components are known, the old-age component is found by subtraction. The same total dependency ratio is given for both countries, so their different youth values produce different old-age values.

For country X, old-age dependency is \(60-45=15\). For country Y, it is \(60-25=35\). Country Y therefore has the higher old-age dependency, and the difference is \(35-15=20\) points. Hence option B is correct. The comparison is in dependency-ratio points, not necessarily a 20 percent difference.
