In a country, 32 percent of the population is aged 0-14 and 8 percent is aged 65 and above. If the remainder is of working age, what is the total dependency ratio?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: 67

The dependency ratio compares the population outside the working-age group with the working-age population. Children aged 0–14 and older people aged 65 and above are treated as dependents in this question. First find the working-age share by subtracting both dependent shares from the whole population. Then divide the dependent share by the working-age share and multiply by 100.

The dependent share is \(32+8=40\) percent. The working-age share is \(100-40=60\) percent. Therefore, the total dependency ratio is \(40/60\times100=66.67\), which rounds to 67 dependents per 100 working-age people. Thus option C is correct. Option A is only the dependent percentage, not the ratio relative to workers.
