If an area has very high fertility but also high infant and child mortality, which conclusion about age structure should be drawn carefully?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: High fertility does not always guarantee a very large surviving child population

A high birth rate tells us that many children are being born, but it does not tell us how many will survive. High infant and child mortality can remove a substantial share of those born before they reach later childhood ages. Consequently, the number of surviving children in the age structure may be smaller than the birth rate alone seems to suggest.

The careful conclusion is therefore that high fertility does not always guarantee a very large surviving child population, so option A is correct. This does not mean the child population must be zero, nor does it prove that elderly people will dominate or that the working-age group will disappear. Mortality, survival, age distribution, and population history must all be considered together.
