Why is the date of payment important in a loan account?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: To calculate the period of interest

The governing concept is time-based accrual of interest. A partner’s loan normally carries interest for the period during which the firm uses the unpaid money. The payment date identifies when the outstanding balance, or a part of it, ceases to be payable and therefore fixes the period for which interest must be calculated. For example, if an amount remains unpaid for six months, interest is computed for six months; payment then stops further interest on that portion, unless the agreement provides otherwise. Option A is correct. The partner’s name, firm address and selling price are not determined by the loan payment date.
