A, B, C and D share profits in the ratio 7:5:4:2. After B’s death, A, C and D acquire B’s share in the ratio 3:1:1. What will be the new profit-sharing ratio?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: 10:5:3

B’s original share is 5 out of the total 18 parts. This share is acquired by A, C and D in the ratio 3:1:1; hence, A receives 3 parts, C receives 1 part and D receives 1 part out of B’s 5 parts. Therefore, the new shares are A = 7 + 3 = 10, C = 4 + 1 = 5 and D = 2 + 1 = 3. Thus, the new ratio is 10:5:3. Exam tip: Divide the outgoing partner’s share according to the gaining ratio and add each gain to the partner’s old share.
