A, B, C and D share profits in the ratio 2:3:4:5. D retires, and A, B and C acquire his share in the ratio 2:2:1. What will be the new profit-sharing ratio?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: 4:5:5

The total of the old ratio is 2+3+4+5=14, so D’s share is 5/14. This share is acquired by A, B and C in the ratio 2:2:1, giving A 2/14, B 2/14 and C 1/14. Therefore, the new shares are A = 2/14+2/14=4/14, B = 3/14+2/14=5/14, and C = 4/14+1/14=5/14. Hence, the new ratio is 4:5:5. Exam tip: Express the retiring partner’s share in terms of the total old ratio before distributing it in the gaining ratio.
