A, B, C and D share profits in the ratio 5:4:3:2. B dies, and A, C and D acquire B’s share in the ratio 1:2:1, respectively. What will be the new profit-sharing ratio?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: 6:5:3

The old total ratio is 5+4+3+2=14, so B’s share is 4/14. This share is acquired by A, C and D in the ratio 1:2:1; therefore, they receive additional shares of 1/14, 2/14 and 1/14, respectively. The new shares are A = 5/14+1/14=6/14, C = 3/14+2/14=5/14 and D = 2/14+1/14=3/14. Hence, the new ratio is 6:5:3. The ratio 1:2:1 represents only the acquisition of B’s share, not the new total profit-sharing ratio. Exam tip: Add each partner’s acquired portion to their existing share.
