A, B and C share profits in the ratio 2:5:3. B dies, and the goodwill of the firm is valued at ₹1,80,000. How much will B’s executor receive for goodwill?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: ₹90,000

B’s share under the old profit-sharing ratio is \(\frac{5}{2+5+3}=\frac{5}{10}\). Therefore, the amount due to B’s executor for goodwill is ₹1,80,000 × \(\frac{5}{10}\) = ₹90,000. ₹72,000 equals \(\frac{4}{10}\) of the total goodwill, whereas B’s share is \(\frac{5}{10}\). Exam tip: in case of death, first find the deceased partner’s old profit-sharing fraction and multiply it by total goodwill.
