A, B, C and D share profits in the ratio 3:2:2:1. On D’s retirement, the new profit-sharing ratio of A, B and C becomes 4:3:1. What is the gaining ratio of A and B?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: 1:1

Under the old ratio, A’s share was 3/8 and B’s share was 2/8. Under the new ratio, A’s share is 4/8 and B’s share is 3/8. Therefore, A’s gain is 4/8 − 3/8 = 1/8 and B’s gain is 3/8 − 2/8 = 1/8. Hence, their gaining ratio is 1/8:1/8 = 1:1. Exam tip: calculate each continuing partner’s gain as new share minus old share; the retiring partner’s old share is not directly used in this comparison.
