A, B and C share profits in the ratio 5:1:4. A retires, and the goodwill of the firm is valued at ₹1,50,000. What amount of goodwill is attributable to A?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: ₹75,000

A’s share in the old profit-sharing ratio is \(\frac{5}{5+1+4}=\frac{5}{10}=\frac{1}{2}\). Therefore, A’s share of goodwill is ₹1,50,000 × \(\frac{1}{2}\) = ₹75,000. The continuing partners use this amount for the retirement adjustment. In the exam, first add the ratio terms and then multiply the goodwill by the retiring partner’s fraction.
