A, B and C share profits and losses in the ratio 1:4:5. B retires, and the firm’s goodwill is valued at ₹80,000. What is B’s share of goodwill?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: ₹32,000

B’s old profit-sharing ratio is 4 out of a total of 10 parts, so B’s share of goodwill is \(\frac{4}{10}\). Therefore, \(₹80,000 \times \frac{4}{10} = ₹32,000\). ₹16,000 represents only half of the goodwill, not B’s 4/10 share. In the exam, first add the ratio terms and then multiply the goodwill by the retiring partner’s fraction.
