Which ratio is used to distribute a retiring partner’s goodwill amount among the continuing partners?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: Gaining ratio

On retirement, the continuing partners obtain the outgoing partner’s share of future profits. The amount of goodwill due to the retiring partner is therefore charged to the continuing partners in proportion to the benefit they receive. That proportion is called the gaining ratio, calculated as new ratio minus old ratio for each continuing partner. Hence option A is correct. The old ratio describes the arrangement before retirement and does not measure the additional benefit. The sacrificing ratio is mainly used when a new partner is admitted and existing partners give up part of their shares. Cash ratio is not a standard ratio for allocating goodwill in partnership reconstitution.
