A, B and C are partners sharing profits in the ratio 3:2:1. When C retires, A and B continue the business in the profit-sharing ratio 3:2. What is the gaining ratio of A and B?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: 3:2

In the old ratio 3:2:1, A’s and B’s shares are 3/6 and 2/6. In the new ratio 3:2, their shares become 3/5 and 2/5. Therefore, A’s gain is 3/5 − 3/6 = 3/30 and B’s gain is 2/5 − 2/6 = 2/30. Hence, the gaining ratio is 3:2. Exam tip: calculate gaining ratio as new share minus old share for each continuing partner.
