A and B share profits in the ratio 4:1. On the admission of new partner C, a General Reserve of ₹75,000 was wrongly distributed among A, B and C in the new ratio of 3:1:1. How much less or more did A receive than the amount he should have received?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: ₹15,000 less

A General Reserve created before the admission of a new partner must be distributed only among the old partners in their old profit-sharing ratio. A’s correct share was ₹75,000 × 4/5 = ₹60,000. Due to the error, A received ₹75,000 × 3/5 = ₹45,000 under the new ratio. Thus, A received ₹60,000 − ₹45,000 = ₹15,000 less. The option showing ₹15,000 more is incorrect because it reverses the direction of the difference. Exam tip: For reserves existing before admission, use the old partners’ old ratio.
