In which ratio is the premium for goodwill distributed among the old partners?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: Sacrificing ratio

The governing principle is compensation for sacrifice. When a new partner is admitted, the old partners may surrender portions of their former profit shares so that the incoming partner can receive the agreed share. The premium for goodwill is compensation for exactly that surrender, so it is credited to the old partners in the ratio in which they sacrifice their shares. This is called the sacrificing ratio, calculated as old share minus new share. The old ratio is appropriate for distributing undistributed past items, and the new ratio governs future profit sharing; neither automatically determines goodwill premium. Equal distribution is used only if the partners' sacrifice is equal or the agreement specifically requires it.
