A, B and C share profits in the ratio 3:4:3. After B retires, A and C will share profits in the ratio 2:3. What will be the gaining ratio of A and C?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: 1:3

Under the old ratio of 3:4:3, A and C each had a share of 3/10. Under the new ratio of 2:3, A receives 2/5 and C receives 3/5. Therefore, A’s gain is 2/5 − 3/10 = 1/10, while C’s gain is 3/5 − 3/10 = 3/10. Hence, the gaining ratio is 1/10:3/10 = 1:3. Remember that the new profit-sharing ratio is not the same as the gaining ratio.
