A firm earned profits of ₹50,000, ₹70,000 and ₹90,000 in three successive years. The profit of the second year includes an abnormal profit of ₹10,000. What will be the total profit for all three years after adjusting for the abnormal profit?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: ₹2,00,000

The abnormal profit must be deducted from the second year’s profit: ₹70,000 − ₹10,000 = ₹60,000. Therefore, the adjusted total profit is ₹50,000 + ₹60,000 + ₹90,000 = ₹2,00,000. ₹2,10,000 is the unadjusted total and therefore is incorrect. Exam tip: Adjust abnormal items before calculating total or average profit for goodwill.
