A and B have capitals of Rs 1,10,000 and Rs 70,000 respectively. The firm wants equal capitals while keeping total capital unchanged. Which adjustment is correct?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: A will withdraw Rs 20,000 and B will bring Rs 20,000.

The governing concept is adjustment of partners’ capitals without changing the firm’s total capital. Existing total capital is Rs 1,10,000 + Rs 70,000 = Rs 1,80,000. If the two capitals are to be equal, each partner must finally have Rs 90,000. A currently has Rs 20,000 more than the target, so A must withdraw Rs 20,000. B currently has Rs 20,000 less than the target, so B must introduce Rs 20,000. The withdrawal and introduction cancel each other in the firm’s total capital. Therefore option A is correct; option B changes the total capital, option C reverses the required directions, and option D ignores the unequal balances.
