A introduced capital of ₹1,20,000 on 1 April and additional capital of ₹30,000 on 1 January of the same accounting year. Interest on capital is allowed at 10% per annum, and the accounting year ends on 31 March. What is the total interest on capital?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: ₹12,750

The capital of ₹1,20,000 introduced on 1 April remained invested for the full 12 months, so its interest is ₹1,20,000 × 10% = ₹12,000. The additional capital of ₹30,000 introduced on 1 January remained invested for only 3 months, so its interest is ₹30,000 × 10% × 3/12 = ₹750. Therefore, total interest is ₹12,000 + ₹750 = ₹12,750. ₹15,000 is incorrect because the additional capital cannot earn interest for the full year. Exam tip: whenever capital changes during the year, calculate interest on each amount according to its actual period of use.
