At the time of dissolution, if an asset has not yet been sold, at what value is it transferred to the Realisation Account?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: Book value

On dissolution, assets are transferred to the debit side of the Realisation Account at their book values. When an asset is subsequently sold, the actual sale proceeds are recorded on the credit side of that account. Therefore, book value is correct for the initial transfer of an unsold asset; market value or estimated selling value may become relevant only when the asset is actually settled or taken over by a partner. Exam tip: remember—book value is debited, while actual sale proceeds are credited to the Realisation Account.
