In which situation is disappearance of an S wave most expected?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: The wave enters a liquid layer

S (secondary or transverse) waves travel by shearing the material. A liquid has virtually no shear rigidity, so S waves cannot propagate after entering a liquid layer and are expected to disappear. Granite, basalt, and the upper mantle are solid materials through which S waves can travel. Exam tip: the absence of S waves in the outer core is key evidence that it is liquid.
