India's latitudinal and longitudinal extents are nearly similar in degrees, yet why are kilometre distances different?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: Distance between longitudes varies with latitude

The governing concept is the unequal spacing of meridians on a spherical Earth. Lines of latitude are parallel, so the ground distance represented by one degree of latitude remains approximately constant, close to 111 km. Meridians, however, converge toward the poles; the distance represented by one degree of longitude is largest near the Equator and decreases as latitude increases. India spans similar numbers of latitude and longitude degrees, but its north-south and east-west kilometre dimensions therefore need not be equal. Option A is correct. Option B is false because latitude lines are not zero-distance apart, while C and D misuse the meaning of kilometre and longitude.
