In two compounds, a fixed mass of 12 g of A combines with 18 g and 30 g of B, respectively. What is the simplest ratio of the masses of B?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: 3:5

The governing concept is the law of multiple proportions. When the same fixed mass of one element combines with different masses of another element to form different compounds, those different masses should be compared and expressed in a simple whole-number ratio. Here, 12 g of A is constant in both compounds, so only the corresponding masses of B are compared: 18:30. The greatest common divisor of 18 and 30 is 6. Dividing both terms by 6 gives 18 ÷ 6 : 30 ÷ 6 = 3:5. Therefore, option A is correct. Option D is the original, unsimplified ratio; option C incorrectly compares A with B; and option B reverses the order of the two compounds.
