Potholes on a river bed are the result of which process?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: Abrasion by pebbles in swirling water

Potholes are circular or cylindrical hollows produced by abrasion in a turbulent river channel. Small pebbles become trapped in depressions, and swirling or eddying water makes them rotate repeatedly. Their grinding action enlarges and deepens the hollow in the bedrock. This is a fluvial erosional process, whereas glacial plucking, marine deposition, and wind deflation involve different agents and cannot explain river-bed potholes.
