Why was the surrender of titles so important in the Non-Cooperation Movement?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: Because it rejected colonial honour and moral legitimacy

Colonial titles were honours or official recognition granted by the government to selected Indians. Returning them was a deliberate public refusal of that recognition and of the prestige attached to colonial authority. It showed that nationalists would no longer cooperate with the regime or accept its moral approval. Options B, C and D describe consequences that did not follow from surrendering titles.
