Why was the Rowlatt Act opposed?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: It allowed imprisonment without trial

The governing concept is the defence of civil liberties against colonial repression. The Rowlatt Act extended extraordinary wartime powers and allowed the government to arrest and detain people without a proper public trial. Indians viewed this as an attack on legal rights and personal freedom, so Gandhi called for opposition through satyagraha. Option A is correct. The Act did not grant swaraj, abolish taxes or ban foreign cloth; those claims are unrelated to its provisions.
