In satyagraha, what was emphasised instead of defeating the opponent?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: Changing the opponent's heart through truth

The governing concept is the moral purpose of satyagraha. Its aim was not to crush, humiliate or physically defeat an opponent, but to reveal injustice through truth, disciplined non-violence and voluntary suffering. By appealing to conscience, the satyagrahi hoped that the opponent would recognise the wrong and change. Option A is correct. Buying an opponent, frightening one through violence or seeking a foreign army would contradict the ethical and non-violent basis of satyagraha.
