Why does plaster of Paris become hard when mixed with water?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: It changes into gypsum

Plaster of Paris is calcium sulphate hemihydrate, CaSO4·1/2H2O. When water is added, it undergoes hydration and reforms gypsum, calcium sulphate dihydrate, CaSO4·2H2O: CaSO4·1/2H2O + 3/2H2O → CaSO4·2H2O. The interlocking gypsum crystals produce a hard mass, which explains its use in casts and moulds. The other products are unrelated.
