When the water content of guard cells increases, stomata open. What are both a benefit and a risk for the plant?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: Carbon-dioxide entry increases, but water loss may also increase

Guard cells regulate the stomatal pore. When they become turgid because of increased water content, the pore opens. This allows atmospheric carbon dioxide to diffuse into the leaf, supporting photosynthesis and food production. At the same time, water vapour escapes more readily through the open pore, increasing transpiration and possible dehydration. Thus option A correctly states both outcomes; the other options use unrelated animal processes or false plant effects.
