If alveolar walls become thick, why will gas exchange be affected?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: Gases will have to cross a greater distance to reach the blood.

The governing concept is diffusion distance. Oxygen must diffuse from alveolar air through the alveolar wall and capillary wall into blood, while carbon dioxide moves in the opposite direction. Thickening increases the barrier distance, so diffusion becomes slower and the rate of gas exchange can fall, especially when the concentration gradient is unchanged. Option A correctly applies this principle; the other options describe impossible or unrelated events.
