Why does copper metal generally not give hydrogen gas with dilute acids?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: Copper is less reactive than hydrogen

In the usual metal–acid reaction, a metal above hydrogen in the reactivity series displaces hydrogen from a dilute acid: metal + acid → salt + H2. Copper lies below hydrogen in the series, so it cannot normally displace hydrogen ions from dilute hydrochloric or dilute sulfuric acid. Therefore option A is correct. Copper is a metal, does not convert acid into a base, and does not instantly dissolve in water. Special oxidising acids can behave differently, but they are outside this general rule.
