What is the correct volume ratio of gases in electrolysis of water?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: Hydrogen : oxygen = 2 : 1

The balanced equation for electrolysis of water is \(2H_2O \rightarrow 2H_2 + O_2\). At the same temperature and pressure, gas volumes are proportional to the number of moles. Hence, the volume ratio of hydrogen to oxygen is \(2:1\). The ratio \(1:2\) would be correct only if the order were oxygen : hydrogen. Exam tip: In a balanced equation, the coefficients of gaseous products give their volume ratio under the same conditions.
