In the chlor-alkali process, what is the correct pair of gas at cathode and gas at anode?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: Hydrogen and chlorine

The chlor-alkali process electrolyses concentrated aqueous sodium chloride, or brine. At the cathode, water is reduced and hydrogen gas is released: 2H₂O + 2e⁻ → H₂ + 2OH⁻. At the anode, chloride ions are oxidised to chlorine: 2Cl⁻ → Cl₂ + 2e⁻. Sodium hydroxide remains in solution. Hence option A gives the correct cathode–anode order; option B reverses it.
