Why did the possibility of united India weaken after Direct Action Day?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: Communal violence and distrust increased sharply

Direct Action Day was observed in 1946 amid serious disagreement between the Muslim League, Congress, and the British government over the constitutional future of India. The events were followed by severe communal violence, especially in Calcutta and later in other regions. Killings, fear, displacement, and hostile political reactions damaged trust between communities.

When political groups no longer trusted one another, reaching agreement on a united constitutional arrangement became much harder. The violence did not mean that Congress and the League had become fully united, nor did it automatically unite the princely states or bring a constitution into force before independence. It deepened the atmosphere that eventually contributed to Partition. Therefore, option A is correct.
