Famous Indian Rulers

Correct answer: A. Pataliputra

Explanation: Udayin, also written Udayabhadra or Udayin in historical accounts, was an important ruler of Magadha in the Haryanka line. He is traditionally associated with establishing Pataliputra, the city later known as Patna, at or near the confluence of the Ganga and Son rivers. Its location was strategically useful for communication, trade, agriculture, and control over the expanding Magadhan kingdom. Pataliputra eventually became one of the most important political centres of ancient northern India.

Choice A is correct because Pataliputra is the city linked with Udayin’s foundation in the usual school-level account. The other choices belong to different historical settings: Lahore is associated with later regional and imperial histories, Jaipur was founded much later by Sawai Jai Singh II, and Hyderabad was founded in the medieval period by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah. A helpful memory sequence is that Rajagriha was an early Magadhan capital, Vaishali was also important in the region, and Udayin is especially remembered for shifting attention to Pataliputra. The question asks for the traditional association, not a modern city-history debate.

Correct answer: B. Shunga Dynasty

Explanation: Pushyamitra Shunga founded the Shunga Dynasty after the decline of the Mauryan Empire. He had been a Mauryan military commander and is traditionally described as having overthrown the last Mauryan ruler, Brihadratha, around the second century BCE. He then established his own rule in northern India. The Shunga period is therefore placed in the post-Mauryan phase of Indian history, before the later rise of the Gupta Empire.

The easiest way to answer is to match the ruler’s name with the dynasty he established: Pushyamitra Shunga belongs to the Shunga Dynasty. The Nanda Dynasty came before the Mauryas, while the Gupta and Pala dynasties appeared much later and were founded by different rulers. The word ‘Shunga’ in the ruler’s name is also a useful memory clue, although the historical sequence is the stronger reason. Therefore, option B is correct.

Correct answer: C. Chandragupta I

Explanation: The correct answer is Chandragupta I. Kumaradevi was his queen and is remembered as an important figure of the early Gupta period. She is generally identified as a princess of the Licchhavi family, and her marriage to Chandragupta I connected the Gupta rulers with this influential clan. This relationship helped strengthen the political position and prestige of the rising Gupta dynasty. Her name is also known from coins issued in the names of both Chandragupta I and Kumaradevi, which is unusual and historically significant.

To solve the question, match Kumaradevi with the Gupta ruler who was her husband. She was not the queen of Samudragupta, Skandagupta, or Kumaragupta. Samudragupta was the son and successor of Chandragupta I, while Skandagupta and Kumaragupta ruled later in the Gupta line. Therefore, option C, Chandragupta I, is the correct choice. The Licchhavi marriage is the key historical clue that distinguishes this answer from the other Gupta rulers.

Correct answer: D. Bengal

Explanation: Direct answer: Option D is correct. Ballala Sena was a ruler of the Sena dynasty, which ruled an important part of Bengal in eastern India during the medieval period. The dynasty is associated with Bengal, especially the region around Gauda and nearby eastern areas. A is wrong because Kashmir had different ruling traditions and was not the main region of the Sena dynasty. B is wrong because Malwa was a central Indian region linked with other dynasties. C is wrong because Mysore is in southern India and was not the homeland of the Sena dynasty. D is correct because Ballala Sena belongs to Bengal’s medieval political history. Memory cue: Sena dynasty—Bengal; Ballala Sena—eastern India.

Correct answer: A. Kannauj

Explanation: Jaichand belonged to the Gahadavala dynasty, whose principal seat of power was Kannauj. The Gahadavalas ruled mainly in medieval North India. Ujjain is more closely associated with the Paramaras, Thanjavur with the Cholas, and Warangal with the Kakatiyas. Exam tip: Remember Jaichand with Kannauj and the Gahadavala dynasty.

Correct answer: B. खजुराहो के मंदिर — Khajuraho Temples

Explanation: The Chandela rulers, who controlled parts of central India roughly between the ninth and thirteenth centuries, are most closely associated with the Khajuraho group of temples in present-day Madhya Pradesh. These temples are celebrated for their Nagara-style architecture, finely carved sculptures and religious variety, including Shaiva, Vaishnava and Jain traditions. Much of the surviving complex was built during the Chandela period. Therefore option B is correct. The Konark Temple is linked with the Eastern Ganga dynasty, Brihadeeswarar with the Cholas, and Sanchi Stupa with an earlier Buddhist tradition and Mauryan-era beginnings. Those associations distinguish the distractors.

Correct answer: D. Jhansi

Explanation: The direct answer is D: Rani Lakshmibai was associated with Jhansi. She was the queen of the princely state of Jhansi and became one of the best-known leaders of the Revolt of 1857. The reasoning is simple: identify Lakshmibai as the ruler of Jhansi; connect her resistance against British rule with the events of 1857; choose Jhansi. Option A, Awadh, was another major centre of the revolt, but it was not Lakshmibai’s kingdom. Option B, Delhi, was important because rebels recognised Bahadur Shah Zafar there, but it was not the city with which she was principally identified. Option C, Kanpur, was associated especially with Nana Sahib and other events, not with Lakshmibai’s rule. Option D is correct because she was known as the Rani of Jhansi and defended Jhansi during the revolt. Be careful: several cities were important in 1857, so the question asks for her personal association, not a general revolt centre. Memory cue: Lakshmibai equals Jhansi.

Correct answer: A. Ahom Kingdom

Explanation: Sukaphaa, also written as Sukapha or Chaolung Sukaphaa, is closely associated with the beginning of the Ahom Kingdom in the Brahmaputra valley. He is remembered as the Tai leader who entered the region in the thirteenth century and established a political base in present-day Assam. Therefore, his name belongs to the history of Assam and the Ahom rulers, not to the histories of Mysore, Malwa, or Awadh.

To solve the question, connect Sukaphaa with the kingdom founded by the Ahom people. The Ahom Kingdom gradually became a powerful state in Assam and continued for several centuries. Mysore is associated with rulers such as the Wodeyars and Tipu Sultan, while Malwa and Awadh have different historical traditions. Hence option A, Ahom Kingdom, is the correct choice.

Correct answer: B. Telugu
