Depth cues are visual signs that help the eye understand distance and three-dimensional space. Examples include relative size, overlap, placement, value, sharpness, and perspective. These signs normally support one another: a distant object may appear smaller, lighter, higher, and less detailed. When one cue suggests that an object is near while another suggests that it is far, the viewer cannot form a stable reading of the scene. The result is spatial confusion.
