Longitudinal waves
In Class 9 Science, the topic Longitudinal Waves explains how particles of a medium vibrate parallel to the direction in which a wave travels. Students study the formation of compressions and rarefactions, and relate these regions to the characteristics of sound waves, such as wavelength, frequency, amplitude and speed. The topic also clarifies how sound travels through air and other media, why it cannot travel through a vacuum, and how these ideas support the study of sound waves and their applications.
