Atomic number
In this Class 9 Science topic from “Journey Inside the Atom,” students learn that the atomic number (Z) is the number of protons in an atom’s nucleus. It uniquely identifies an element and helps distinguish one element from another. For a neutral atom, students connect the atomic number with the number of electrons, use it to interpret atomic notation, and understand why atoms of the same element have the same atomic number, including isotopes.
