Distance and displacement
In Class 9 Science, this topic from “Describing Motion Around Us” explains how to describe an object’s change in position. Students learn that distance is the total path travelled and a scalar quantity, while displacement is the shortest straight-line change from the initial to the final position and has direction. Through everyday examples, position diagrams, units, and simple calculations, they compare the two ideas and understand why distance can be greater than displacement, while displacement may be zero even when an object has moved.
