तलछटन में किसी मिश्रण के भारी, अघुलनशील कण गुरुत्वाकर्षण के कारण नीचे बैठ जाते हैं। इसके बाद ऊपर के अपेक्षाकृत साफ द्रव को सावधानी से दूसरे पात्र में उड़ेलकर अलग किया जाता है; इसे निथारना कहते हैं। इसलिए सही क्रम पहले तलछटन और फिर निथारना है। परीक्षा टिप: ‘बैठना’ तलछटन है और ‘ऊपरी द्रव उड़ेलना’ निथारना है। / In sedimentation, heavier insoluble particles settle at the bottom under gravity. The clearer liquid above is then carefully poured into another container; this is decantation. Therefore, sedimentation occurs before decantation.
