जंग लगने के लिए लोहे का ऑक्सीजन तथा जल या नमी के संपर्क में होना आवश्यक है। रंग की परत लोहे की सतह पर सुरक्षात्मक अवरोध बनाती है, इसलिए वायु और नमी लोहे तक नहीं पहुँच पाते और जंग लगना कम हो जाता है। सतह का कठोर होना जंग रोकने का कारण नहीं है। परीक्षा टिप: जंग-रोधी लेपन धातु को ऑक्सीजन और नमी से अलग करते हैं। / Rusting requires iron to come into contact with both oxygen and water or moisture.
